Shoplifting arrest at Macy's leads to forgery charges for Utica man

By DAVE DELLECESE

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica man who was arrested following a shoplifting complaint at Macy's in Sangertown Square is now facing additional charges, including forgery, after he provided police with a false name, even while signing his fingerprint card.

According to New Hartford Police, officers responded to Macy’s for a shoplifting complaint shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2009.

While investigating the incident, police say the suspect in question - Arthur W. Lawler, 40, of Utica, falsely identified himself to police by providing a false name.

Police said that after being arrested, Lawler then forged fingerprint cards by signing the false name. Police attempted to verify the information provided by Lawler and discovered that he did in fact provide a false name.

New Hartford Police charged Lawler with petit larceny, false personation, and forgery. Police believe Lawler attempted to hide his identity due to several outstanding arrest warrants out of the City of Utica.

Lawler was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court and was sent to the Oneida County Jail without bail. He is due to re-appear in the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
