NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV)A small fire on Thursday at Casab's Deli in New Hartford had both firefighters and the owners unsure what could have caused it.

The owners of Casab's say they closed up the restaurant and shut everything off before they left at 2 p.m. Thursday, but that a half hour later they got a call the building was on fire.

Fire departments from both New Hartford to Willowvale responded to the scene.

Owner Cliff Casab says a lot of times he gets calls when fire alarms are tripped, but those usually prove to be false alarms. He says when he came to the scene this time he could see smoke coming out of the chimneys.

Fire officials say the fire started and was contained to the kitchen area.

"It was a stove fire at this point," said Tom Bolanowski with New Hartford Fire Department. "Some of the materials were on the stove that ignited. It was confined to the stove. There was no building extension."

Casab says they owned the deli since 1989, and they say this is the first there has been a fire.

New Hartford fire officials say there is extensive damage in the kitchen area. Because of that Casab says they will most likely have to close Friday.
