Used college mattresses find new life at Food Bank

CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - A local college campus is helping those in need by providing them a place to rest their head at night.

Hamilton College throws out approximately 200 used mattresses each year. But this time, the college has teamed up with the Utica Community Food Bank to donate those mattresses to families in need.

This month, the college will give away 100 mattresses to the food bank.

"We have a lot of items that are used on our standards but are very usable and have a usable life left versus sending them to the land fill and have them cast away," said Terry Hawkridge, assistant director of the college's physical plant. "We try to put them back in service somewhere and there's a lot of people who are in need of what we have to offer."

The college will continue to donate used furniture and mattresses to various local charity groups.
