HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - You're never too old to go back to school. That was the theme Thursday at Herkimer County Community College as they held an adult student open house.
As of last month, over 142,000 New Yorkers were unemployed. That number has remained pretty much steady over the past 18 months. That is one of the reasons why, college officials think several dozen adults attended Thursday's open house.
From general studies, to humanities, to business studies, HCCC welcomed all adults interested in attending school. College officials say some were interested in going back to school, others had never been, some were laid off from their jobs, while some were interested in furthering their careers with more education.
That was the goal of Wendy Kirk of Little Falls, who said she has been at her current job for 11 years, but in order for her to move up the totem pole, she needed a diploma. "What I am doing right now is fun, I love my job, but I just want to better myself to make more income." Kirk said.
Program specialist for HCCC, Georgianne Snell who is based out of the Workforce Development office, says most of the adults who attended Thursday's session were looking into business administration as a possible major. She said a lot of people were interested in finding ways to better market themselves or possible become their own boss. "We see a lot people who are dislocated workers who definitely want to come back to college, because they know getting their education is certainly going in the right direction to find a new job and a high paying job, " Snell said. "School and the economy go hand in hand."
