Public speaks out on Roefaro, possible recall

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Mayor David Roefaro is facing some harsh criticism from William Newell and others who want the mayor out of office, but we wanted to get a feel Monday night for how that translated into the community.

We spoke with several dozen people and it was a mixed bag of opinions.

Many were not happy with his recent appointment of colleague and friend Daniel Labella to the Chief of the Utica Police Department. Still others feel he is making a difference in the city.

Here is a sample of some of what we heard tonight:

" I think what he has done is wrong, he did Alpine Slopes with no human input, he took firefighter Dunn's job, and now he put his best buddy in as police chief," said Crystal Wall a Newell Volunteer

"He should be given a little bit more time to prove himself and see if he can make changes before people make judgments on him," said Jeff Adams a former Utica resident.

At a Utica Monday Nite event on Monday, Newell and his team had gathered less than 100 signatures.

Newell has 30 days starting from last Sunday to get 3,000 signatures, thus forcing a special election.
