MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Central New York Farmers, like workers in many industries are struggling during the souring economy, but there may be signs of life.

Strawberries are summer's first big cash crop has begun sprouting in recent weeks. Strawberry season is less than a week old but some farmers are already starting to see strong sales in "U-Pick" strawberry fields.

However, the economy has forced farmers to change operations in some cases.

Marcy farmer owner Mike Candella says he scaled back strawberry growth by several acres in order to save money.

Paul Swistak, who owns a farm in Verona says he hasn't changed anything but does expect people to scale back on strawberry purchases.

According to Jeff Miller Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, Strawberries generate $287,000 in gross strawberry sales.

It's the largest early season fruit crop of the early season and likely second only to apples said Miller.
