LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (WKTV) - New York State Police are investigating a bus crash that killed one woman early Sunday morning on the Adirondack Northway Interstate 87, near exit 21.

According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. and resulted in the death of one female passenger who was trapped under the bus after it rolled onto its side. Authorities are not releasing the identity of the woman but it is believed that she is from New York City.

Queensbury Central Fire Chief Joseph DuPrey told the Post-Star that the bus rolled on its side and slid just south of Exit 21 before slamming into a rock ledge on the left side of the highway. Officials believe the bus drifted to the right before the driver over-corrected, causing the bus to tip and veer off the left side.

Several other passengers and the bus driver were taken to Glens Falls Hospital with injuries. The Associated Press reports that three victims are hospitalized in fair condition and six others were treated and released.

Officials said the bus was carrying people to visit a prison in northern New York with at least a dozen people on board.

The investigation into this accident is still ongoing by New York State Police. It is too early in the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The bus was operated by a privately owned company, not one of the major carriers.
