Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's response to the appointment of Richard Ravtich as Lieutenant Governor:

"I would like to extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to Richard Ravitch upon being named by Governor David Paterson to the position of Lieutenant Governor. Dick Ravitch has a long and distinguished record of public service. Time and time again, he has shown he has the willingness and fortitude to tackle tough governmental and public policy challenges and brought about effective solutions that benefit all New Yorkers. I am hopeful that the Governor's selection of Mr. Ravitch as Lieutenant Governor will help bring an end to the Senate stalemate, and allow us all to move forward to address the many issues of importance to the people of the State Of New York. "

Statement by Senate President and Majority Leader, Malcom Smith, regarding the appointment of Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch:

"Extraordinary times call for extraordinary action. We applaud and congratulate Governor David Paterson's bold decision to appoint Richard Ravitch as Lieutenant Governor and help end the gridlock in the Senate.

A civic and business leader, best known as the former Chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Ravitch is one of the nation's leading voices on urban planning and economic crisis management issues.

For over a month, the Senate has been locked in a stalemate, unable to meet its obligation to the people of New York. Today, the constitutional issue of succession to the office of the Governor has been settled, removing a major stumbling block to our negotiations. "
