Paroled convict from 1979 murder heads back to court for weapon possession

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A paroled local murderer is headed back to court on gun possession charges.

Donato Nappi was convicted in 1980 of the murder of Dawn Grillo. He was paroled last year, and arrested in January on gun possession charges.

Herkimer County prosecutors say Nappi had a gun in his Old Forge home. While the gun was not loaded, officials say there was ammunition in the house.

Nappi was in Herkimer County Court last week for a pre-trial conference.

Usually, the District Attorney's Office extends plea offers during such proceedings. The office did not offer a plea deal to Nappi, in part because of his criminal history. That means the 67-year-old will have to stand trial on the charge.

He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
