Congressman announces $5 million extra for high-speed rail
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Congressman Michael Arcuri announced Tuesday $5 million in extra funding for a high speed rail in New York State.
Arcuri says the money has been put aside for the smaller phases of the whole project, like signals, and crossings. The $5 million is in addition to the $8 billion in funding that was part of the Stimulus bill. Arcuri says right now he, and the other proponents of high speed rail, aren't sure what it will cost to put a rail through New York State. "One of the things we are looking to do is create a large fund the states can barrow against at low interest. So the state share, because states will have to pay, the state can borrow against the fund with low interest and then pay it back over time." said Arcuri. Arcuri says New York State is one of 11 designated corridors, in the country, to receive funding for high speed rails that would stretch from Niagara Falls to New York City. |
