Multiple agencies respond to St. Luke's Hospital for "possible abduction"

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - New Hartford Police and other area agencies responded to an incident at St. Luke's Hospital Sunday morning for "a possible abduction."

The entrances were blocked off for about 15 minutes in what authorities call a standard response.

New Hartford Police say there is a security measure in place so in the event a baby is taken out of the hospital while still having a security bracelet on, area departments are alerted and respond.

The responding agencies were New Hartford, New York Mills, Yorkville, Utica, New York State Police and Oneida County Sheriffs. They say that 14 police cars were at the hospital within four minutes all from different areas.

Sgt. Paul Colburn of the New Hartford Police Department said, "the parents thought they could remove the baby from the hospital, but they couldn't at that time, and the device hadn't been taken off of the child and when they hit the exit to the maternity unit, the alarm sounded. So within a matter of us getting on the scene, we learned it wasn't a true abduction, but the security plan with us and the other agencies worked perfectly with us and the other hospital staff."

Police say they have responded before where there have been disagreements between parents, and they have avoided the child being taken. They say it is a security measure used in hospitals all over the country.
