Two firefighters killed while battling Buffalo blaze

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Officials in Buffalo have released the
names of the two firefighters who died while battling a blaze in a
two-story building early this morning.

Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo says Lt. Charles "Chip" McCarthy and Firefighter Jonathan Croom died after the floor of a corner convenience store collapsed, sending them into the basement.

Lombardo says fellow firefighters had a difficult time reaching the two men because of the conditions. Their bodies were recovered several hours later and carried out on gurneys as fellow firefighters stood by and saluted.

The 45-year-old McCarthy was a 22-year veteran of the department
who was the married father of three children. Croom was 34 years old and joined the department 10 years ago. He leaves behind his fiance and the couple's 9-month-old child.

Officials say they've found no sign of a third person earlier reported to be in the building, but a search of the debris continues.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
