DEERFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Car dealerships say now that the cash for clunkers program is over, they're glad the program existed.
The Carbone family says the cash for clunkers was a big hit. In 3 weeks they sold just over 530 vehicles. Now their big concern is getting all of the clunkers they took in off of their lot.
While 530 vehicles sounds like a lot, it could have been more. The Carbone Auto Group decided to wait a few weeks to take part in the program until they received all the government criteria.
Some vehicles can easily be identified as clunkers, while others still look like cars most people would want to own. Regardless of their look, the gas mileage they get is the deciding factor when determining which car is a clunker.
Carbone Auto Group officials say the 530 plus cars was not a record for sales of cars in a short time, but was a nice shot in the arm for the auto industry as a whole. It also showed that the best way to stimulate the economy was to put money into the hands of taxpayers..."this stimulus program that was less than $3 billion moved the economy in less than seven days when the trillion dollars they spent previous to that did not move the economy one degree," Don Carbone said.
Carbone Auto Group adds the only problem other than getting 500 clunkers off the lot is now trying to collect the money from the federal government. They say it was a process that should have taken 10 days, but is taking a bit longer.
