BOSTON (AP) - Hundreds of people have ventured out on a rainy day in Boston to bid farewell to Sen. Ted's Kennedy.

The public was not allowed near the church where Kennedy's funeral was held, but people lined the nearby sidewalks. American flags, old campaign signs and photographs of Kennedy dotted the street and storefronts leading up to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica.

One woman says she was determined to get as close as she could to the funeral, despite the driving rain -- saying she was going to go even if she had to swim.

As Kennedy friends, family and dignitaries arrived, the crowds were respectful and largely silent.

A handful of people cheered and yelled "God Bless" and "Thank you, Teddy!" as the hearse approached, led by police motorcycles.

A New Hampshire woman used her teenage son's back as a table as
she wrote on a fluorescent green poster: "Health care, do it for Ted."
