DMV fees to go up starting Tuesday

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Need to register your car or renew your drivers license? Starting Tuesday, it will cost you more.

People in Oneida County say they're not happy about being nickled and dimed to death at the DMV. Rates are going up and the lines aren't getting any shorter. People say they're not very happy about it.

"That's a lot of money, especially for a senior citizen like me," said Kathleen Caracchalo. "I'll be 79 and I've got to get it (a license) for five years. That's $64!"

The rate increase hike was passed in this year's state budget.

The cost to register a passenger vehicle is up $10; from $44 to $55.

Renewing your drivers license? That will cost you $62.50.

Oneida County Clerk Sandra DePerno says the county's DMV might be run through her office, but don't call her to complain. She thinks the fee increases are an outrage.

"Call Governor Paterson and tell him," DePerno said. "You're killing us here in upstate New York. People don't have the money to impose all these additional fees and charges...it's not right."

The rate increase will go into effect on Tuesday, September 1.
