NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Republican primary is set for next Tuesday in the race for Town of New Hartford Supervisor. Both men are hoping to replace outgoing supervisor Earle Reed.
Current town officials and the way money gets budgeted are two reasons why two men say they want to be town supervisor. One of the candidates is no stranger to town politics, the other has never run for anything.
John Kalil says this a bold, new step for him since he has never run for any office. The financial advisor says he wants to restore trust in town government. His challenger, Pat Tyksinski, says he wasn't going to run again this year for office, however he says financial problems in the town spurred him to do so. "I know what these departments need to run and run efficiently. Besides that I have a track record I've done it," said Tyksinski.
Tyksinski, a CPA, has served both the Town and Village of New Hartford. In the 80's he was on the village board, and in the late 90's he served as the Town Comptroller. However, he lost a bid for Town Supervisor four years ago. The CPA says when he was comptroller he gained experience he can use now. " It was a very similar situation. We went from a very bad situation financially in the town to probably one of the best financial conditions the town has seen in its history." Tyksinski said.
John Kalil says he has always had an eye for politics but never ran. He says this window of opportunity arose, and he wanted to take advantage."Quite honestly I am concerned about the future of the community." said Kalil.
Kalil, a financial advisor, says he too can use his experience as Town Supervisor. " I am familiar with the budgetary process, and certainly I think the issue here is really common sense. I think that is what is lacking in town government is a common sense approach." Kalil said.
Tyksinski has the conservative and independence lines on the voting ballot. If he wins the primary it will be just him against Democratic challenger Bill Morris, in November. If Kalil wins there will still be three names on the voting ticket.
