Big-government protesters gather in Rome for tea party

ROME, NY (WKTV) - Conservatives across the country want their voices heard. Many have been very vocal at town hall meetings, and now more and more tea parties are taking place. Saturday, a large group gathered on the lawn outside of Fort Stanwix.

The organizers are called The Fort Stanwix Tea Party Patriots, and they want people to remember what tea stands for, taxed enough already. They want no more taxes added on to what they already pay, and they say a definite no to more taxes to pay for someone else's health insurance.

Victoria Kraeger who made her way from Port Leyden to attend the demonstration says,"we're not anti-Obama, or anti-government or such, we're anti-big government and government taking over our lives, that's what we're against."

It is not just the federal government this group is unhappy with, one of the many signs held up in the crowd was directed at state legislators, that they will not be voted back in.

Republican State Senator Joe Griffo who is from Rome was in attendance, "well I think the encouraging aspect of any movement is that people are involved and as a result of that, those in leadership are going to start listening and understand that they're not going to be in those positions if they don't listen and become more responsive."

Some at Saturday's gathering say this is a good non-confrontational way to let politicians know how they feel. Kraeger says, "I think it energizes the people to do more, that they will call their congressman, senators, they will write that letter, not just send them off a quick email, I think that's important to sit down and write how you feel about especially now with the healthcare."
