WHITESBORO, NY (WKTV) - In less than a week three parents of children in Whitesboro schools have died, marking a tragic moment for many in the village.

On September 24th, Robert Mercurio was killed in a car crash in New Hampshire. Mercurio left a son and daughter behind who attend Whitesboro schools. On Monday, Joseph and Kristin Longo died in a murder/suicide. Three of their four children are students in the Whitesboro school system.

School Superintendent David Langone has been meeting with other school officials and dispatching counselors, social workers and other support staff members for faculty and students throughout the day.

So far, Langone says his staff has remained strong, but he admits it's tough to tell how and when the gravity of the situation will impact the school community.

"For the most part there is not a lot of outward display of emotion but people are obviously hit with a sense of reality that this has really occurred and we have to deal with it," Langone said.
