State faces Paterson's budget target date

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The financial staffs of the state Legislature are scheduled to respond to Gov. David Paterson's request for billions of dollars in budget cuts to address a $2.1 billion deficit.

Paterson is asking the Legislature to come up with their own proposals on Wednesday after he cut $500 million from executive branch agencies.

But legislative leaders have said proposing budget cuts has always been the job of the governor, the state's chief executive. The Legislature then reacts to the proposals.

Paterson says he needs ideas from the Legislature to ensure the cuts will be made.

A year ago public worker unions targeted Paterson in an extensive TV ad campaign after he proposed cuts in funding to various state agencies.
