65th annual Woodsmen's Field Days kicks off in Boonville

By NICOLE HART

BOONVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Despite some rain, hundreds of people came out Friday for the kickoff of New York State's 65th annual Woodsmen's Field Days.

It's an event held for people to learn about the forest industry through demonstrations and exhibits and rain or shine, the gates will be open at the Boonville-Oneida County Fairgrounds all weekend.

Lots of people in attendance on Friday said they continue to come back year after year.

"There is just so much for me to see here and I'm interested in a lot of it," said Steven Daniels of Albany. "I like the chainsaw carving, I like the equipment, everything about it, I like."

There is a one time admission fee of $10 for adults.

Kids ages 12 and under are $7 and kids five and under are free.

"You can learn a lot about the forest industry," said Phyllis White, Executive Coordinator. "It affects our lives, every single day."

"We do it every year," said Douglas Kamps, an Exhibitor from Multitek Inc. "It's one of our best shows we do. The whole town turns out and they get very involved with it."

Every square inch of the fairgrounds is jam packed, and from wood carving to wood splitting, there is plenty to do.

"We will be host to the world's Open Lumber Jill Championship tomorrow at 3 pm, which is a huge event, lots of action," said White.

The international event draws quite a crowd, and this year, even a celebrity.

"We have a big visitor coming with us," said White. "Mr. Goodson from Discovery Channel, Swamp Logger."

Celebrity appearance or not, there is always quite a turn out.

"We do a lot of business here," Kamps said. "Northern New York, they do a lot of fire wood and ship it down to the cities, so it's a good area for us, business-wise."

"We have such a great crowd coming to our community because, number one, the hospitality that's extended by our town and the residents of Boonville," White said. "Also, this event is a unique event."
