Former Republican candidate endorses Democrat in Congressional race

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Former Republican candidate in the 23rd Congressional District race, Dede Scozzafava, announced her endorsement Sunday for former opponent and Democratic candidate Bill Owens. Scozzafava dropped out of the race and released her supporters Saturday after a popular pre-election poll showed her in a distant third behind Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman.

Scozzafava said that she feels Democrat Bill Owens is the best of the remaining candidates to build on the legacy of the previous holder of the 23rd Congressional District seat, nine-term Republican Congressman John McHugh.

All day Sunday, well-known Republicans and Republican organizations were announcing their support for the third-party candidate Owens in place of Scozzafava.

The special election for the Northern New York District is being held Tuesday because the position was opened when McHugh was appointed to position of Secretary of Army by President Barack Obama.
