UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Election day is just hours away, and the battle is on to see who will control the Oneida County Legislature.

Will the Republicans maintain their four decade hold?

Both sides say their candidates are qualified and will bring folks to the polls on Tuesday.

Bill Barry, the Oneida County Democratic Committee Chair said that over the past few elections, the democrats have slowly, but surely, been gaining seats. Republicans now hold a slim 15-14 majority.

Barry said he hopes that on Tuesday, those numbers will swing in favor of the democrats.

"We're hoping to take the majority at this point," Barry said. "Everybody get out and vote."

County republicans said they're not worried about losing the majority they have held since 1968.

George Joseph, chairman of the Oneida County Republican Committee said there are many strong republican candidates on Tuesday's ballot.

"We have some quality candidates," Joseph said. "I think our candidates are really what is going to stand out."

Joseph said that after election day, the republicans will go back to work on the county budget. Barry said the democrats want to work on industrial development and cost-cutting measures.
