It's Election Day; what's at stake

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Election Day is finally here. Even though there aren't too many big state or national races happening today, there are a lot of local elected positions up for grabs.

Right now, the Oneida County Board of Legislators currently sits at a 15-14 Republican majority.

If Democrats gain the majority, it will be the first time in more than 40 years.

Republicans are also looking to regain control of the Utica Common Council.

Several other local races that voters are voting on here today include Utica City Comptroller, Utica Common Councilor at large, Utica Common Council 6th District, various Oneida county legislator positions and Oneida County Surrogate Court Judge.

Another close race, the New Hartford Town Supervisor position. Republican Pat Tyksinski is running against Democrat Bill Morris. Both are hoping to replace outgoing Supervisor Earle Reed.

We'll also be keeping a close eye on the race for the 23rd Congressional District. It's a race that has seen a lot of twists and turns since former Congressman John McHugh stepped down to take over as Secretary of the Army.

The latest Siena College poll has Conservative Doug Hoffman leading Democrat Bill Owens by 5 points. The number of undecided voters has grown to 18 %.

Polls will be open at most locations until 9pm.
