Oneida Nation looks ahead to 2010

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a move to "educate" voters about this year's local elections and prepare employees for next year's local, state and national races, the Oneida Indian Nation has set up an election desk at the Turning Stone Casino.

Next to voter registration forms are "Election Guides." These guides list 10 races in Madison and Oneida Counties. Next to candidates with differing views from the Oneidas is a thumbs down icon.
Nation spokesperson Mark Emery said that the individuals with these icons near there names do not have the best interests of the Nations 5,000 person workforce in mind, though no background information of the Nation's interest or that of the candidates is written on the guides.

Decision 2010

The Nation is also looking ahead to next year when numerous seats will be up including the Governor, State and U.S. Senate, Assembly and Congress.
There are no "Election Guides" for these races, but registration forms are at the desk with the other paperwork.

"The ones that are up next year are the bigger races, they are races that are very important, they aer people who have been rather anti-nation in their position and by taking those stances they are obviously taking positions that are against the best interests of the people that work here," said Emery.
