ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Political candidates weren't the only people on the ballot this election day - New York State is also asking voters to decide a matter regarding prison inmates.

The proposition asks voters to decide whether or not state lawmakers can pass legislation allowing state and local prison inmates to volunteer at not-for-profit religious, educational and charitable organizations.

Currently they can do such work on public property.

Some voters were shocked to see the proposition, while others were all for the free labor.

"I didn't even know that proposition was even on the ballot until I read it on the thing and I've got to make a decision right now?" said Jeff Lorentz after casting his ballot in Boonville.

"I think if it's legitimate work and they're legitimately trustworthy, they should be able to do it," said Janet Bourgeois at the Boonville polls. "They should be doing something that's good for the community as well as good for themselves."

Even if the proposition passes, it won't automatically become law - because it aims to amend the state constitution, it has to be voted on and passed by two legislatures in order for it to become law.
