Roefaro issues memo, institutes hiring freeze ahead of 2010-'11 budget

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - As New York faces a multi-billion dollar deficit, Utica Mayor David Roefaro has instituted a hiring freeze for all positions that are paid through the general fund. He says this does not affect grant or HUD funded positions.

In in memo to department heads made public on Monday, Roefaro says Utica is facing a "critical financial situation in preparation of its 2010-2011 budget."

He's asking all department heads to reduce their budgets by 2%, which could save taxpayers over $1 million.
