Residents and officials give new license plates a seal of disapproval

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - "Thumbs down."

That's the overall reaction to the new license plate initiative. Facebook friends, State Senators and County Clerks all agree - it doesn't work.

On Thursday, the New York State Association of County Clerks met in Herkimer to unanimously oppose the empire gold plates. The group will take its message to Albany on Monday, along with a number of state senators from both sides of the aisle, including democrat Dave Valesky and republican James Seward.

As it stands right now, you'll start seeing the new plates next year. It'll cost $25 when you re-register your vehicle, something that doesn't sit well with the majority of people.

"The county clerks across the state oppose it because it comes back to the taxpayers," said Patricia Ritchie, head of the NYS Association of County Clerks. "And we've all said numerous times that the everyday person is saying 'enough is enough' and a $25 fee on a person now is unneeded. They don't want the plates and they don't need the plates."

The conversation continues on the WKTV Facebook Page, where nearly 80 people chiming in on the matter, at least one of which said they like the new look.

The license plate initiative is expected to generate about $129 million for the state, but some say that's not a good enough reason to do it.

"I think things are fine the way they are and I don't think they should be trying to get us for more money," said one man in the North Utica Shopping Center Thursday who didn't wish to be identified.

"Oh yeah look at all you're paying now, with taxes and when you go hunting, and fishing and stuff like that...everything's raised," said Vincent Toti.

"I'd like the state to have more money...that's another thing...but as far as the license plate is concerned, I never liked the old plates," said John Fusaro. "I like the whites with the blue and red in it it looks nicer on a car."

"The statue of liberty was really great," said Linda Fusaro.
