7 year old gymnast sets sights on Olympic podium one day

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - One local gymnast is hoping to compete on the world's largest stage one day.

"There are very few girls that get to go to the Olympics and it would be a dream come true to be able to get there," said Olivia McCoy, age 7.

McCoy knows what it takes to compete in the big leagues just like some of her favorite gymnasts on Team USA.

"I don't want to go to bed because I want to work so hard," said McCoy. "Sometimes I stay up and do gymnastics in my living room because I have a beam and mats at home. I just work really hard."

McCoy is in the gym five days a week. She is on a competitive team and takes lessons with other students at Valley Gymnastics in New Hartford. She also puts in hours of practice at home.

"Grandpa made her a beam and it's in our dining room and she has two big blue mats she lays out in the dining room and now she is talking grandpa into making a bar," said Bonnie Diable, McCoy's grandmother. "She loves to practice, she loves gymnastics, and she is constantly doing something."

McCoy is hoping to make big leaps in the upcoming years and one day stand on the Olympic podium with a gold medal around her neck.
