Picente vetoes amendment to pay Verona and Vernon for legal fight against Oneida Nation

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente has vetoed an amendment to the 2010 budget that would have Oneida County give $25,000 each to Vernon and Verona to help fund their legal fight against the Oneida Indian Nation.

When the Oneida County 2009-2010 budget was passed last week, Picente said he would be veto the measure.

In order for the veto to be overturned by the Oneida County Legislature, a two-thirds majority vote would be required. The amendment to give the money originally only passed by a vote of 15-14.

Picente said that the original vote would set "a bad precedent" because he feels by allocating these funds, other municipalities will seek such funding. Picente said the county has already spent money on their own lawsuits.
