FRANKFORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Frankfort is now preparing for an unexpected expense as a bridge in the village is in major need of repair.

The Main Street Bridge over Moyer Creek near Cemetery Hill has been yellowed flagged.  That means the bridge needs to be repaired or it could risk being shut down.  One side of the bridge has eroded due to water splashing against it.

Engineers have assessed the project at $1.9 million.  Grant writers are searching for ways to raise the funding.

Mayor Frank Morocco says the longer the village waits to fix the problem, the more costly it will become.

"If we can work on this as quickly as possible get everybody involved, the school, the town, the county and let them voice their concerns along with us to our Representatives; that would definitely help," Morocco said.

Morocco says if nothing is done, the bridge could be red flagged in a matter of years.  If that were to happen, not only would it impact residential traffic, but also the transportation of emergency equipment.
