Firefighter suffers minor injures while fighting West Utica fire

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Firefighters battled a fire at 1026 Oriskany Street early Sunday morning, according to officials.

A two and half story structure ignited around 12:40 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they say that they found a small laundry room in the back of the house with flames.

Chief Fire Marshal Raymond Beck said that firefighters conducted an interior attack and kept the flames contained to the back of the house, which was the laundry room and kitchen. The fire was declared under control about an hour later.

Investigators remained on the scene until about 4:00 a.m. and it was determined that the fire began in the laundry room and spread to the kitchen.

Moderate fire, smoke and water damage were all sustained in the laundry room and kitchen, but more smoke damage was apparent throughout the entire structure.

Due to the damage, occupants Annette Baker and her two children were displaced and are currently staying with family. The Utica Chapter of the American Red Cross says they responded to the fire and provided assistance to the displaced.

The actual cause of the remains under investigation pending interviews with the owner and occupants. The owner is Charles Talarczyk.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the flames. Thomas Stark suffered a knee injury and was sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment. A spokesperson for ths hospital says Stark was treated and had been released.

Utica Fire Department records indicate the property was registered and inspected by the City of Utica.
