Rush starts as holiday shopping season revs up

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV/AP) - Black Friday is under way and nervous retailers will be eagerly waiting to see if the expected big holiday shopping crowds materialize and if it means a better opening weekend than last year's disaster.

Some stores started Black Friday yesterday in hopes of catching more early birds and avoiding potentially dangerous crushes of crowds.

Some shoppers who took advantage of Thanksgiving Day openings say they had the same thing on their minds. Others say they don't think the widely hyped big specials will turn out to be that big a deal.

A number of stores, including Walmart and many Old Navy locations, opened on Thanksgiving. Toys R Us opened most of its stores at midnight.

Analysts say if there's good news, it's that retailers this year are armed with lean inventories and more practical goods to sell.

Experts predict weekend sales will be about the same as last year.
