MILFORD, N.Y. - The Otsego County Sheriff says that an eight year old female was arrested on Monday for juvenile delinquency for recklessly starting a fire Sunday afternoon that damaged a mobile home and shed in the Shady Acres Trailer Park at Silliman Cove in the Town of Milford following a joint investigation between the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services and the Sheriff's Office.

The fire was determined to be incendiary in nature by following the investigation.

Authorities said that the child started leaves and pine needles on fire out behind the residence. A couch that was outside against the back of the mobile home caught fire and the fire traveled onto the mobile home and an outside shed. The fire caused severe damage to the mobile home and damage to the storage shed.

There were five adults in the residence at the time of the fire, including a man who was sleeping in a bedroom that that fire destroyed.

A neighbor called 911 to report the fire and informed the residents of the mobile home that it was on fire.

On Monday at the Sheriff's Office, the child and her father were issued an appearance ticket returnable in the Probation Department later that afternoon. The child's case was referred to the Otsego County Family Court by the Otsego County Probation Department for further proceedings.

If the child was 16 or older she would have been charged with fourth-degree arson and second-degree reckless endangerment and could have faced up to eight years in prison.
