Crews working to fix water main break in New Hartford; boil water advisory in effect

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - It could take crews up to ten hours to restore water to some New Hartford residents, following a water main break.

The break happened early morning on Christmas Eve between Graffenburg Road and Sherman Drive in New Hartford. Mohawk Valley Water Authority officials said that due to the location of the break - in a wooded area off the road - the estimated time of repair could be up to 10 hours or even later in the evening.

A boil water advisory will be in effect for the next 48 hours or until tests show the water is safe to drink. Residents are being asked to boil their water for at least two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.

These are the areas under the boil water advisory:

- Graffenburg Road (from House #1354 towards Frankfort)
- Harts Drive
- Hays Road
- Salisbury Drive (added)
- Sherman Drive (House #1710 until Sherman Circle)
- Taber Road (East of Tilden Ave)
- Taber Lane

Several callers to NEWSChannel 2 said they were without water following the break Thursday morning.

At the scene, Water Authority employees were faced with the challenge of where the pipe is - underneath a creek. Repair workers had to park in residents' driveways and walk down a hill to the creek area and hand dig the site, as they could not get equipment to the location.
