NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man was sent to jail late Saturday evening after police say he stole electronic devices from Sangertown Square Mall and then provided a false name while being arrested.

New Hartford Police say that 47-year-old Jon A. Giannolla stole two portable DVD systems from Sears around 6:00 p.m. Saturday. The value of the merchandise was $309.

The loss prevention officers on duty recognized the man as the same one who stole two other portable DVD systems valued at $379.

Police were called to the scene around 5:50 p.m. and arrested the man. Upon arrest, he identified himself as "John A. Genovese" and was taken to the New Hartford Police station.

As he was being processed and officially charged, police say they discovered that he had given a false name and was then accurately identified as Jon A. Giannolla.

Giannolla was originally charged with two counts of petit larceny. After they discovered his false identity, he was then also charged with forgery and false personation. The forgery charge, police say, resulted from Giannolla signing the arrest documents with the false name.

Giannolla was arraigned in New Hartford Town Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.

He is scheduled to reappear in court on December 30.
