Massive fire destroys German Flatts home, possible explosion being investigated

By ANDREW DONOVAN

GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A house on Warren Road is destroyed after a massive fire broke out following a New Year's Eve party.

According to Mohawk Fire Chief Bernie Sommer, fire fighters responded around 6:00 a.m. Friday and found the building fully engulfed in flames. Multiple fire departments including Frankfort and Cedarville were called in to assist.

The fire chief said there were reports of an explosion. The windows and doors were completely blown out. The fire department is investigating the possible explosion and said it may have been related to a propane device.

According to officials, there was a New Year's Eve party at the residence before the fire, but they believe most guests left before the fire broke out. An unoccupied vehicle was parked in front of the house.

The fire agencies had a tough time fighting the blaze due to the location of the home, about 200 feet from the road.

The home was completely burned to the ground. Only the deck and chimney remained standing.

The American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
