State Trooper killed in collision with truck

MORRIS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A state trooper was killed in a car accident Wednesday afternoon.

The fatal accident happened just before 3:00 Wednesday afternoon on State Route 23 in the Town of Morris.
 
Trooper Jill E. Mattice, 31, of Oneonta State Police, collided with a tractor trailer driven by F.M. Saggese, 33, of West Oneonta.
 
Mattice was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
Trooper Mattice was a 6 ½ year veteran of the New York State Police. She was assigned as the School Resource Officer for the Unadilla Valley Central School and Franklin School Districts.

Meanwhile, Governor David Paterson released the following statement regarding the fatal accident:

"It was with great sadness that I learned today of the death of Trooper Jill E. Mattice, a nearly seven-year veteran of the New York State Police who was killed this afternoon in a vehicular accident in Otsego County...Her community was enhanced by her service; her State is humbled by her sacrifice.  Trooper Mattice is the first female member of the New York State Police to be killed in the line of duty.  On behalf of all New Yorkers, it is with profound gratitude for her service that I offer my deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues." 

Officials will hold a press conference with additional information Thursday at 1:30 pm.
 
The investigation is ongoing.
