Schumer Introduces Bill Opposing NYRI Route

Nate Crossett

New York Regional Interconnect's plan to build a 200-mile power line from Marcy to Orange County is running into more opposition.  U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer has introduced legislation in the Senate aimed at weakening the ability of NYRI to sidestep the New York Public Service Commission's approval process for its power line route.

At a meeting on Monday, Schumer admitted the need for power and power lines, but he disagrees with the way NYRI has gone about doing it.

Supporters of the bill say its a good start but much more needs to be done to keep power lines from destroying their way of life.

"There is a lot of things that are going out that are written," says Marina Latella, of the Upstate NY Citizens Alliance, " and I just hope he goes out and gets it passed, and we get some action around here."

Here is a few details about the bill.  It would eliminate the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's ability to grant eminent domain.  Also, if the NYS denies an application for an interstate transmission line, the applicant cannot appeal the decision, unless they prove to FERC the decision lacked merit.

Schumer says the bill will be introduced at some point next week, and it most likely be voted on by September.
