Remsen General Store employee accused of embezzlement

REMSEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - An employee of the Remsen General Store is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the business.

Adding insult to injury - the owners of the General Store say the accused employee was a trusted family friend.

Denice Carr, 42, of Remsen, was skimming money off of bank deposits and falsified records to hide the discrepancy, according to Joan Moore, the general manager of the Soda Fountain Diner - owned by the same people as the General Store.

State Police said that after a complete audit was conducted, it is believed that tens of thousands of dollars had been embezzled from their 2009 sales and A.T.M. machine.

Moore said her staff is devastated by the news, especially in such a small community where everyone knows everyone.

"We've known each other pretty much since I moved here from Long Island," Moore said. "It's a trust issue, totally. I really thought the woman was okay."

Carr is charged with one count of third-degree grand larceny. She was arraigned in the Village of Oriskany Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $30,000 cash or bail.

Carr is due back in court on February 8 at 2 p.m.
