Police: Oriskany woman's body recovered from Old Forge lakeOLD FORGE, N.Y. (WKTV) - An Oriskany woman has died after police say her snowmobile fell through open water on the Fulton Chain of Lakes Saturday evening. According to Old Forge Police, 22-year-old Nicole Robertello of Oriskany died when her snowmobile fell into Third Lake. Authorities say Robertello was snowmobiling on the frozen Fulton Chain of Lakes with Clayton Knutti of Ava. The two were traveling west in the channel area between Second and Third Lakes. The two encountered a patch of open water. Knutti accelerated, according to police, and was able to get over the patch of open water. He reportedly looked behind only to find Robertello in the water. Knutti then turned around and jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue Robertello. When Knutti's attempt was unsuccessful, police say he ran to a nearby home to summon help. A search and rescue effort ensued on the lake by the Old Forge Fire Department. After about two hours of searching, Robertello's body was recovered from the frigid waters. Robertello was pronounced dead by Herkimer County Coroner Danforth Rivet. Knutti reportedly suffered from hypothermia and was sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Most Popular |
