A Winter Blast: Snowshoeing at the Utica Zoo

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's a hidden gem at the Utica Zoo. Snowshoeing is a great workout and it is an inexpensive alternative to the gym. During our excursion, Megan, Bill and Don take the North Trek Nature Trail for about a half mile hike.

The trail takes you through a wooded area of the park. Along the way, there are several outdoor zoo exhibits- including the Siberian Lynx. Further down trail- we find the Mexican Wolves. We also come upon the Snowy Owls, Siberian Tigers and the Sea Lions.

It is a few hours of fun, not to mention exhausting. Zoo Executive Director Beth Irons explains how that can be a good thing. "For Parents, if you want to wear the kids out in an hour, bring them up to the zoo put them on a set of snow shoes and let them walk the North Trek Nature Trail. By the time they get to the end, they'll fall asleep in the car on the way home."

Snowshoe rentals are $2.50 per hour. Entrance to the zoo in the winter months is free, but they do ask for a donation.
