11 year-old charged after trying to stab fellow student with pencil

SAUQUOIT, N.Y. (WKTV) - An 11 year-old student is suspended from school and facing assault charges after police say he tried to stab another student with a pencil.

New Hartford Police say the incident happened Monday morning at Sauquoit Middle School. The school resource officer says the suspect was getting help on math problems from the victim. The suspect became irritated with the victim's help and said he would stab him if he did not leave him alone.

When the victim tried to help the suspect with his work again, the suspect stood up in his chair and tried to stab the other student with the sharpened end of his pencil.

As the student tried to get away, he suffered a 2" scrape along his neck.

The 11 year-old suspect involved was suspended from school pending a superintendent's hearing. The 11 yr old suspect was also interviewed by the Town of New Hartford Police Department and was charged with attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon. The suspect is scheduled to report to Oneida County Probation on February 23rd at 9:00 am.
