Picketers protest building of new Herkimer County jail

HERKIMER – The New York State Commission of Corrections wants Herkimer county to build a new jail because of structure and environmental concerns regarding the current facility.

Today a group of residents known as the "Concerned Citizens for a better Herkimer County" gathered and formed a picket line near the County's office building.

“I think they could tax me right out of the county here,” said Geril Fritts, of the concerned citizens group. “It's being ruled by a commission and I don't find acceptable at all.”

The group later entered a legislative meeting to discuss their frustration and opposition to a new jail which is slated to be built off route 28 near Farber Lane.

State officials gave the county a deadline of mid-2008 to have a new jail constructed.

County officials say a groundbreaking is not imminent.

The county has yet to close on the land purchase or undergo necessary environmental tests on the site.

State public information officials we spoke with regarding the issue say they have the authority to close the current facility if the 2008 deadline isn't reached, but do not expect to do so.
