Hamlin family prepares for second Olympic trip

REMSEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Ron Hamlin introduced his daughter, Erin, to the luge at age 12 during a USA Luge Slider search program in Syracuse.

Ever since that first run in the middle of a Syracuse street, Ron and Eilleen Hamlin said they have been enjoying the ride right alongside their daughter.

This will be the second Olympic trip the Hamlin family will make, following the 2006 Olympics in Torino. The Hamlins said they never in their wildest dreams would have thought Erin would have enjoyed the luge as a kid.

She certainly did enjoy it, and ever since her teen years has been traveling all over the world competing in luge events. The Hamlins said they don't make every event because of scheduling, but that much like in 2006, they will not miss the Olympics.

"There is nothing like when you get there at the track going to Torino and seeing your daughter on the jumbotron," Eilleen Hamlin said. "That was a wild thing. (Her) big face at the top and you're going 'Oh my god. That's my daughter.' Knowing that the world is watching...it's like 'Wow, this is pretty cool.' Yeah it makes you cry."

The Hamlins said that when they get to Vancouver Thursday night, there will not be much interaction with Erin, as they want to let her focus. The couple said they are hoping to get to spend some time with her during a few days next week, once the luge events are done.

The first luge runs are scheduled for Monday night at 8 p.m. eastern time.

However, NBC is not scheduled to carry the luge events on television until early Tuesday morning.
