Cash For Clunker...Appliances!

By By GARY LIBERATORE

(WKTV) - The Government's Appliance Rebate Program started Friday morning, and numerous Central New York residents are already attempting to take part before the funds run out.

The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated $300 million of stimulus funding for the program, with each state reciving its own share. Here in New York, that share equals out to roughly $18 million.

The program is scheduled to last nine days, until February 21, but the owners of Morehouse Appliance in New Hartford believe the funds may run out quicker than that - much like the funds in the "cash for clunkers" program ran out.

The government wants you to get rid of your old energy-hogging appliances in favor of more energy-efficient ones.  In order to qualify, you must buy an appliance with the Energy Star seal.  For a refrigerator, you would get $75 back, a washer $75 and $50 for a freezer.
