GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Syracuse University student was killed early Saturday morning on the Thruway after she attempted to cross the street and was struck by another car.

New York State Police say 21-year-old Jamie Klemczak, originally of Albany, was involved in a minor accident first around 4:30a.m., which caused her to exit the car.

The accident happened in the westbound lane, about three miles east of Exit 30, the Herkimer exit, at milepost 216.8.

Both westbound lanes in the area were completely closed along with the eastbound passing lane during the morning hours, but have since reopened.

Syracuse University's Chancellor, Nancy Cantor, issued a statement to regarding the loss of their community member. According to Cantor, Klemczak was an undergraduate senior.

Police say they are looking for the vehicle who fled the scene. The car is a silver Toyota, unknown model, that should have front-end driver side damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police in Herkimer at 315-866-7111.
