State Police still searching for car involved in fatal Thruway hit-and-run

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Police spent the day Sunday looking for a vehicle involved in the fatal hit-and-run accident that took the life of a Syracuse University student on the Thruway early Saturday morning.

21-year-old Jamie Klemczak, a senior at S.U., was killed after being hit by a car after she attempted to cross the street.

Police say they are looking for the vehicle that fled the scene. The car is a silver Toyota, unknown model, that should have front-end driver side damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police in Herkimer at 315-866-7111.

The accident happened in the westbound lane, about three miles east of Exit 30, the Herkimer exit, at milepost 216.8.

New York State Police say, Klemczak originally of Albany, was involved in a minor accident first around 4:30a.m., which caused her to exit the car.

Klemczak then attempted to cross the westbound lanes and was stuck by another passing vehicle.

Both westbound lanes in the area were completely closed along with the eastbound passing lane during the morning hours, but have since reopened.

Syracuse University's Chancellor, Nancy Cantor, issued a statement to regarding the loss of their community member. According to Cantor, Klemczak was an undergraduate senior.
