NEWSTALK: Longtime WKTV staff recall their time at 1980 Winter Games

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WKTV) - Longtime WKTV Photojournalist Keith Hunt recalled his time at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He was joined by former WKTV Anchor Dick Lawler, who was also up in Lake Placid for the games, for a Newstalk to discuss their memories of the historic event.

From the notes of Keith Hunt:

I went up to Lake Placid twice for the 1980 Winter Olympics. During the first trip, we spent a lot of time downtown in and around the oval which was outside.

The second trip up was spent at the ski jumping complex which is two miles from downtown. It took forever because of the lack of transportation and due to the drivers...they were for the most part, brought in from as far away as NYC and had no clue as to how to get around.

This was the first Olympics that used man-made snow. Huge snow mountains were made and then carted off by dump trucks to the venues.

I was able to stand in the media area of the 120 meter jump and watch as the jumpers sailed to the bottom of the complex.

The station also did extensive stories on the Adirondack Scenic Rail with rail service from Utica right to the Olympics.
