Why did Thruway victim cross roadway?

GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Three days after the fatal crash, State Police are still not releasing the name of the man who might have killed a Syracuse University student in a thruway crash early Saturday morning.

Jamie Klemczak, 21, of Albany, was involved in a minor, one-car accident. One question state police are trying to answer today: why she left her car, which was east-bound, and apparently walked into the west-bound lane and into the path of the car that killed her.

A 49-year-old Ilion man might have been driving that car. He turned himself into police on Sunday, saying it wasn't until he saw accounts of the crash and heard the description of the car-which matched his own-that he realized he may have hit Klemczak. The man told police he was returning from a concert in the Boston area. His attorney, George Aney, says he is confident alcohol and drugs were not involved in the crash. Aney says he's confident the state police investigation will reveal that sleep deprivation wasn't a factor, either.

"I think it will be determined also when the state police investigation is concluded that he had even stopped along the way and taken a nap to avoid any kind of sleep deprivation," says Aney.

State Police say they will release the man's name once their investigation is completed, but they're not saying how long that will be. State Police on Monday said they anticipated releasing the man's name in the next few days.
