Dozens of cows killed in Westmoreland barn fire

WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - Westmoreland firefighters spent nine and half hours on the scene of a barn fire that killed a couple dozen dairy cows.

Flames broke out at B & K Fedor Farm on Peckville Road around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, but crews were still putting out hot spots shortly before 5 p.m. They didn't leave the scene until around 6:30p.m.

When asked about the difficulty of fighting the fire, First Assistant Fire Chief Brad White said that it came down to manpower.

"After we fight the fire we have to do a lot of overhaul, with the hay burning and ripping sheet metal down and all that," White said. "The guys get tired and we've got to rotate them to keep them fresh."

Westmoreland had help from ten other departments, who helped the homeowners get most of their cows outside of the burning barn and to safety.

Unfortunately, not all the cows were able to make it out safely, and more than 30 perished in the fire.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigated, officials say it was not suspicious.
